Position description

The Sudmant Lab in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking applications for a Junior/Asst. Specialist.

The Sudmant Lab studies genetic and molecular phenotypic diversity at both the organismal and cellular level. We study the evolution, causes, and consequences of aging as well as the evolution of genome structure and cellular diversity. Our lab analyzes, integrates, and generates massive-scale genomic datasets, a scientific approach that leverages computational biology and statistics as well as wet-lab and high-throughput experimental methods.

This experimentally-focused position will contribute to projects pertaining to aging, resilience, genomics, genome structure, and cellular diversity. The Junior/Asst. Specialist will contribute to a variety of ongoing projects in the lab, including projects related to somatic structural variation during aging, the evolution of structural variation in primates, and studying hypoxia during pregnancy using single cell profiling of placentas. The Junior/Asst. Specialist will have the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of new genomics technologies such as single cell and long read sequencing and to apply these technologies to exciting aging and evolutionary research.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Carry out single cell/ nuclei isolation and library preparation for scRNA-seq and scATAC-seq.
  • Carry out high molecular weight DNA extractions and library preparation for long read sequencing.
  • Equipment maintenance, ordering of supplies and maintenance of stock laboratory materials, and media and reagent preparation.
  • Culture of established cell lines and primary cells.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Potential to co-author publications.
  • Training and mentoring undergraduate students in the laboratory.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) program.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree).

Preferred qualifications

  • BS/BA in the Biological Sciences.
  • Experience working in a laboratory in the general area of genetics, genomics, or molecular biology.
  • Experience working in the wet lab with basic molecular biology techniques (eg. DNA/RNA extraction, cloning, PCR).
  • Strong biological background and understanding of molecular biology.
  • Excellent organizational management; demonstrated ability to multi-task within demanding time-frames and to work independently.
  • Experience with single cell and single nuclei isolation from complex tissues for downstream sequencing analyses (scRNA-seq, snRNA-seq, ATAC-seq).
  • Experience with high molecular weight DNA extraction.
  • Library preparation for long and short read sequencing.
  • Culture of established cell lines and primary cells (isolation, maintenance, and analysis of cell phenotype).
  • Experience with RT-qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA, and/or mass spectrometry.
  • Competency or experience with Python or R.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
