We are seeking a tenure-track faculty member (assistant or associate professor level) in all fields of optical science and engineering, but would particularly welcome a focus in research fields including medical optics, light scattering, optical design, virtual reality systems, and computational imaging.

Desirable candidates should:

• Work to promote collaborative research, not just with other academic research laboratories, but also with companies, government research centers, etc.
• Demonstrate a promising plan for independent research
• Show the ability to support the department's educational activities, at undergraduate and graduate levels
• Promote international research collaboration

This is a full-time tenure-track faculty position, with tenure review to take place no later than June of the fifth year. Should the tenure review be unsuccessful, the position will expire at the end of the fifth year. If a life event such as childbirth, childcare, or nursing care occurs during the tenure-track period, the tenure-track period can be extended for a certain period of time according to the period of absence. Other treatment will be in accordance with the Employment Regulations for Employees of Utsunomiya University.

Scheduled date of appointment: September 1, 2024 or as soon as possible after that date.

Qualified applicants must have:

1. A PhD or equivalent degree
2. Demonstrated research ability in optical engineering
3. The ability to conduct research and write papers of international standard level
4. The ability to conduct education, research, and committee duties while maintaining smooth communication with other faculty members and staff

The salary and other benefits of the open faculy positions are as stipulated in the annual salary regulations of the National University Corporation Utsunomiya University. The total salary includes the basic annual salary, twice a year bonuses, and regional allowances. Please consult the available salary tables listed on the university's webpage for reference.

Although the working hours for the positions are discretionary, salaried working hours are calculated based on the expectation of 7 hours and 45 minutes of work per day. Saturdays and Sundays are generally exempt from work, and paid holidays include national holidays, year-end, and New Year holidays (12/29 - 1/3), and days designated by the university president. Employees can also make use of annual paid leave and special leave, in accordance with national university policies. Employee benefits include health insurance supported by the Mutual aid association of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and also unemployment insurance.
