Departmental Overview

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management is a multidisciplinary program that recognizes the urgency of the challenges, and the enormous opportunities that may lead to transformative change. Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory bench work for genomics research such as DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, quality control cleaning and quantification and other next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation techniques.
• Training and supervision of graduate and undergraduate student researchers who are hired as student assistants or who are conducting independent research in the laboratory.
• Carry out field work on islands in the Pacific for collection of arthropod specimens using passive and active entomological trapping methods.
• Laboratory management tasks, including reordering and restocking lab disposables, maintaining lab organization for multiple users, and hazardous waste disposal.

Required Qualifications

• Previous experience with NGS library preparation equipment and methodologies including DNA extraction kits and protocols, gel electrophoresis, adapter ligation (e.g., PCR), SPRI bead cleaning, quantification (i.e., qPCR, qubit, nanodrop).
• Ability to explain principles of molecular techniques to student researchers and troubleshoot procedures.
• Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous field work experience, knowledge of arthropod taxonomy.
• Bachelors of Science, or equivalent, in genetics, ecology and evolutionary biology, or related field.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $22.02 (Step 1) - $25.90 (Step 5).
