Research Scientist – Environmental Remediation - 530514

Job Summary:

Provides direct research support to the Soil & Groundwater team at the Florida International University's Applied Research Center (FIU-ARC). This role encompasses technology innovation, development, evaluation and deployment of technologies aligning with the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) environmental remediation of contaminated sites. Engages in research on projects focused on the remediation of sites contaminated with heavy metals, radionuclides.

  • Leads the management, coordination, control of assigned subtask, oversee research activities, and maintaining effective communication with collaborators, project manager and PI;

  • Formulates and implements methodologies for conducting laboratory scale experiments aimed to remediate heavy metals and radionuclides-contaminated soil, groundwater and, surface water including substances like mercury, PFAS, uranium, technetium etc.

  • Leads or contributes to proposal development efforts with a budget exceeding of $250,000 annually.

  • Publishes in peer- reviewed journals and conference proceedings and present research findings at the national level to elevate the scientific stature of the Applied Research Center (ARC);

  • Establishes methodologies and guidelines for sample preparation and analysis using advanced analytical instruments such as DMA (mercury analyzer), ICP-MS, HLPC, ICP-OES, IC and, MC be able to analyze and summarize data.

  • Performs geochemical speciation modeling utilizing software tools like Geochemist Workbench, Visual MINTEQ etc. and interpret data.

  • Ability to test, evaluate, and deploy treatment technologies in field conditions.

  • Manages and provides leadership for technical support in the designated area of expertise for research endeavors.

  • Trains, supervises, and mentors undergraduate and graduate students involved in the research. Works effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree and one (1) year of relevant experience. Must have a PhD or proof of degree by hire date.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience interpreting and working with environmental and geochemistry data, solids characterization.

  • Experience with proposal development and identifying funding opportunities.

  • Ph.D. in civil/environmental engineering, environmental science, chemistry or related discipline with strong background and experience in environmental chemistry, as well as publications in peer-reviewed journals.
