Position description
The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior/Assistant Specialist in the Koshland Lab, in the area of microbial genetics.
The Koshland laboratory studies higher-order chromosome structure in wild-type and mutant budding yeast using cutting-edge imaging, cell biology, biochemistry, and genetics. The goal is to understand fundamental chromosome metabolism in all eukaryotes and to interrogate the contribution of chromosome structure defects to disease and birth defects.
The Junior/Assistant Specialist will provide a variety of support and research functions within the Koshland lab. Primary responsibilities include:
- Using genome editing and cell biology to generate hypothesis-driven genetic experiments
- Preparing data for verbal presentations, figures, and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
- Conducting research in a collaborative environment with an appreciation for lab safety and an environment that values respect and collegiality
- Assisting and participating in the maintenance and running of the lab including managing equipment, ordering supplies, and assisting with lab organization

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) or enrollment in a Bachelor's (or equivalent international degree) program
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Preferred qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in an area of molecular and cell biology such as biochemistry, genetics or cell biology
- Completion of an upper division course in genetics is strongly preferred.
- Coursework in molecular biology and biochemistry.
- Experience working in a research lab.
- Basic molecular biology techniques.
- Ability to design and interpret experiments.
- Ability to prepare figures for manuscripts.
- Demonstrated proficiency in working as part of a research team.
