Duties
Research
● The tenure-track position is intended to foster high-quality research in a strategically selected domain. The successful candidate is therefore expected to develop an ambitious research programme that delivers excellent, international-level research results, as well as to build up and enhance national and international research collaborations in privacy technologies.
● More specifically, the research needs to concentrate on privacy technologies with an integrated view on technical, legal as
well as user aspects. The research program should address privacy-enhancing technologies focusing on one or more of the
following areas: computing on encrypted data (MPC, FHE, ..), zero-knowledge protocols, identity management, privacy-friendly
authentication protocols, network-level privacy, distributed ledgers, and context-based services. It is expected that the research
touches a broad range of application areas.
● Among others, research will be conducted within the framework of the Cybersecurity Initiative Flanders. In addition, it is expected that the candidate develops other interdisciplinary collaborations both within and outside the university, publishes in this area at the highest scientific level, acquires competitive funding and supervises PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

Teaching
● The successful candidate will have to take on teaching duties in the Master of Electrical Engineering (courses in ICT Security
and Networks), the Advanced Master in Cybersecurity and/or the Advanced Master in Artificial Intelligence – all of the Faculty of Engineering Science – and/or similar courses in other faculties.
● The candidate is expected to meet the reigning KU Leuven standards regarding level and orientation of academic programs and to adhere to KU Leuven’s concept of education. Commitment to the quality of the education as a whole is an obvious requirement.

Service
● In addition to research and education-related tasks, you are expected to take on administrative, organizational or promotional tasks within the research division, the Department and the Faculty, as well as tasks of more general scientific and societal service.
● You are actively involved in promoting the Faculty of Engineering Science and the different education programs in the domain of Electrical Engineering to future students and participate in information and public-relations activities of the faculty.

Profile
● Candidates must hold a PhD or doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, in Computer Science or in Informatics.
● They are expected to be excellent researchers who show independence and originality. They must be dedicated to high-quality teaching, and will have to contribute to the quality of both the research and the teaching at the Department and research division and the Faculty, respectively.
● The candidate’s research ability should be evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals and top conferences in the field. International research experience is expected. In their application, candidates need to include a description of the objectives they wish to realise/methods they plan to use during the five-year period of the tenure-track position.
● Proficiency in English is required. Near-native proficiency in the English language (at least level C1) is expected of all applicants.
● The official language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings.
● Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch, respectively English, to the required standard.
● The full-time position will be offered for a period of five years starting on September 1, 2024, at the level of tenure-track assistant professor (docent). A positive evaluation at the end of the five-year appointment will result in a tenured appointment as associate professor (hoofddocent).

Offer
We offer full-time employment in an intellectually challenging environment. KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally
oriented university that carries out both fundamental and applied scientific research. It is highly focused on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research and strives for international excellence. The university actively works together with research partners in Belgium and abroad, and provides its students with an academic education that is based on high-quality scientific research.

● KU Leuven is well set to welcome foreign professors and their family and provides practical support with regard to immigration & administration, housing, childcare, learning of Dutch, partner career coaching, etc.
● To facilitate scientific onboarding and to accelerate research in the startup phase a starting grant of 110,000 euro is offered to new professors with substantial other funding, appointed for at least 50%.
● As a junior academic professor, you will be appointed as tenure-track assistant professor (“tenure track docent”) for a period of 5 years, starting on September 1, 2024. After this period and provided a positive evaluation, you obtain a tenured position as associate professor.
