For PhD (fully-funded) research position in Protection of Maritime Heritage through Marine Planning
The MARCOAST Ecosystems Integration Lab (see https://portman.net.technion.ac.il/ ) is seeking a well-qualified and highly motivated student for PhD studies on the above mentioned topic. The student will work under the joint direction of Professor Michelle Portman at the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Professor Assaf Yasur-Landau of the School of Archeology and Maritime Civilizations at Haifa University The student will be enrolled at the Technion (in the planning track). S/He will be responsible for researching and developing protection policy for the submerged remains of maritime cultures and underwater heritage sites along the Mediterranean shores of Israel within the framework of marine spatial planning.

The ideal student should have interests and background (i.e., previous degree) in at least one of the following topics:

  • Marine biology/marine conservation
  • Coastal recreation/tourism
  • Heritage studies
  • Archeology
  • Preservation
  • Natural resources studies
  • Engineering (civil, mechanical, environmental)
  • Landscape architecture (with some connection to preservation/history)
  • Geography (with some connection to preservation/archeology/history)

Scuba dive accreditation is desirable and interest and concern for at least one of the following topics is important: marine policy; marine ecology; marine conservation policy; marine planning, GIS and remote sensing, marine and coastal engineering.
The student must devote his/her full-time to research at the Technion and Haifa University.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree, received high grades, including for their research thesis undertaken as part of their M.Sc. degree. They must be able to meet the Technion acceptance criteria for PhD studies.


Most of the work will be conducted in English; proficiency in writing and reading English is highly advantageous.
