Job Summary:
The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Instructor position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
This position focuses on undergraduate chemistry instruction and innovation in general chemistry lecture and labs, both on campus and online. Coordination and collaboration with other faculty members teaching the same course is expected. The faculty member will also contribute to department service activities. This is a renewable position and may be eligible for promotion upon achievement of the eligibility criteria and demonstration of a sustained record of exceptional achievement and evidence of professional growth and innovation in teaching and assigned duties.
The Department of Chemistry at OSU has a mission that includes instruction of approximately 225 undergraduate majors and 3000 non-majors each year.
The primary mission of the OSU Department of Chemistry is to provide a program of undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral education in chemistry and to conduct research and scholarly activities focused on areas of chemistry important to human health, materials and the environment. The department offers BS, MS and PhD degrees in Chemistry and has a rapidly growing student body, including 200 undergraduate majors. The College of Science provides a core instructional role at OSU, supporting the ideals of learning, discovery, and engagement that are the foundation of a land-grant university. The College embraces instruction and research in disciplines ranging from the physical, mathematical, statistical sciences to the life sciences that are based in unbiased inquiry and a dedication to discovery and innovation. 90% Teaching, Advising, and Other Assignments:This is a typical breakdown of tasks, however, faculty focus and percentages may vary. Faculty are expected to teach the equivalent of 8 courses (9-month appointment), or 10 courses (12-month appointment).
- 70% Teach assigned courses:
- Prepare and deliver course, interact with students, supervise TAs, grade HW and assessments, develop and maintain the course website, hold regular office hours, curricular development, incorporate content connecting to societal impact.
- 10% Advise or mentor students with focus on career preparation and success:
- 10% Scholarship and professional development: may include the following:
- Lead or participate in seminars, workshops and other training events
- Serve and actively engage on student committees
- Develop or contribute to instructional materials or resources
- Publish/disseminate work on evidence-based instruction in the department, OSU or broader community
10% Service: May include the following:
- Participate on departmental, college and university committees
- Outreach
- Professional service activities such as
- Committee or leadership role in professional associations/societies
- Serve on research, advisory or review panels
- Review journal manuscripts, research proposals or external course materials
- Organize or chair conferences or conference sessions
What You Will Need
- M.S. in Chemistry or an allied discipline.
- Evidence of knowledge of a broad range of general chemistry.
- Demonstrated achievement in or significant potential for teaching excellence.
- Evidence of or significant potential for working effectively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Tolerance for diverse ideas within the academy, including those different from ones own.
- Commitment to free inquiry based on evidence and criticism.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
- Ph. D. in Chemistry or an allied discipline.
- Experience as an instructor for in-person and/or online courses.
- Experience with curriculum development.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Requires work in instructional lab environment with several hours of standing, evening and weekend hours may be required.
