Overview

The Department of Developmental, Molecular and Chemical Biology is a Basic Science research department in the School of Medicine. Members of the department carry out research on fundamental and medically related problems in different aspects of cell biology.


What You'll Do

Work in collaboration with the senior investigator in the host laboratory. S/he works independently to participate in or lead a portion of a research project or projects. The research associate contributes ideas and suggestions to the research effort, operates independently and publishes papers in collaboration with the senior investigator. This individual may have other responsibilities in the laboratory such as supervision of staff, training of graduate students or postdoctoral fellows, grant proposal writing, writing papers, etc. Weekly hours typically exceed the standard 35 hours. The candidate may have to work on weekends and travel off-site to conduct experiments or to attend workshops and conferences.

  • Perform scientific research as a professionally responsible member of the research team. Carries out independent research and may lead a portion of the project. Is responsible for problem exploration and definition, planning of the approach and sequence of steps, execution of experiments or studies, interpretation of findings, and documentation of results and may lead others in this effort. Keeps current with developments in the scientific field.
  • Publish results and author papers in collaboration with the senior investigator. May present findings at meetings.
  • Participates in other laboratory responsibilities such as supervision and/or training of research technicians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows; development of grant proposals, etc.


What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:

• Three years’ minimum experience in postdoctoral research position
• PhD, MD, DVM, DDS, DMD or equivalent Doctoral degree
• Culture and genetic manipulations of mammalian cells
• Molecular biology techniques needed to analyze genetic mutations and expression of mRNA and proteins

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with mammalian cell culture as a model organism
• Proven ability to write manuscripts and contribute to the writing of grant applications
• Experience supervising undergraduates and junior graduate students in research projects
• Experience working with BSL2 conditions and willingness to work at the BSL3 level
