Position description
The Department of ESPM: Ecosystem Sciences Division at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist in the laboratory of Professor Sunaura Taylor, in the area of Neoliberal Environmental Thought.
The specific duties for the chosen candidate will involve research on critical studies of human-nature relations in relation to the connections between economic ideas, and especially the role of markets, as vehicles for regulating and governing challenging ecological and climatic crises.
In particular the dominant neoliberal views of economics posits that the market is not merely a site of exchange but a site of knowledge production superior to any institution-including government planning bureaus and science itself-and therefore the omniscient market must be defended even if it costs humanity the Earth. The research project intends to explore how neoliberals have navigated this paradox for nearly a century, a period in which they have developed an array of frameworks to manage environmental problems. It rests on the idea that believe that a history of neoliberal environmental thought is needed to understand how this small clique of conservative intellectuals have come to dominate environmental debates to the degree that some progressive social movements have adopted their policies, such as cap-and-trade, geoengineering, and the commons.

- detailed records of research performed
- conclusions made and communication of results orally through notes and records
Professor Taylor will provide mentoring to the candidate to help structure the research project and collect data, and also to produce high quality publications.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD or equivalent international degree.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Minimum of 2 years of research experience post PhD.
Preferred qualifications
- 3 years Post PhD experience
- PhD in environmental history, history of economic thought, geography, environmental sociology, political ecology, or a related field.
- Publications or works in progress in the subfield of neoliberal environmental thought.
- Has demonstrated organizational skills to help foster a new subfield by organizing workshops, editing special issues, mentoring students, etc.
