Scientist III - Biology
Tufts University
Overview
The Allen Discovery Center is dedicated to the advancement of basic biology and biomedicine, and to using an integrated approach to control biological structure and function. Through a combination of molecular genetics, biophysics, and computational approaches, researchers at the Center work toward a multi-level control of patterning. Novel technology is being developed to modulate the bioelectric communication that enables cells to coordinate their activities toward specific anatomical and functional outcomes. This new type of epigenetic control has significant implications for developmental biology, evolution, unconventional computation, and synthetic bioengineering. Applications in progress include the repair of birth defects, regenerative medicine, cancer reprogramming, and synthetic biology.
What You'll Do
We are seeking a qualified individual with a background in both biology and machine learning to join the Allen Discovery Center as a remote staff scientist III. A Research Scientist in the Center drives a research program that directly contributes to the Center mission. Working independently, but in close consultation and in cooperation with the Director of the Allen Discovery Center at Tufts University.
The Scientist III's primary activities will be editing a journal collection (and organizing a workshop) dedicated to exploring the concept of "world modeling" as used in artificial intelligence and cognitive science more generally. Please see this description of the planned special issue. Part of this work will also involve preparing one or more manuscripts for publication on the extent to which all living systems can be described as hybrid machine learning architectures, with a particular focus on the intelligence of individual cells (as kinds of minimal agents). Qualified candidates will have the following knowledge base:
• Develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols. • Analyzes, interprets, summarizes and compiles data. • Collaborate on current/future grants through participation in grant proposals, submissions, publications, and presentations. • Participate in contributing data to publications and presentations as co-author. • Participate in teaching, research, and mentoring including providing research guidance to graduate students or postdoctoral scholars.
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and skills as typically acquired by a PhD and at least one year of post-doctoral training is required for this position
The individual must have demonstrated that he/she is able to make significant contributions to related scientific research and scholarship (publication in good journals and h ave potential to direct his/her own research
An employee will be expected to publish regular, significant contributions in peer-reviewed journals.
This project requires the applicant to bring their own funding which will need to be secured in advance of work commencing
Preferred Qualifications:
A successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and most importantly a passion for using science to improve the human (and non-human) condition.
Pay Range Minimum $63,600.00, Midpoint $79,500.00, Maximum $95,400.00 Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
