Senior Research Technician

Overview The New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory (NERBL) supports advanced infectious disease research. It is a BSL3 biocontainment laboratory and animal facility available to investigators from academia as well as industry partners engaged in the development and validation of preventives and interventions targeted to infectious disease. The NERBL is part of an NIH-funded national network of biosafety laboratories engaged in infectious disease research and in support of efforts towards pandemic preparedness.
What You'll Do
The position involves working on infectious disease organisms including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a research laboratory setting in the NERBL biosafety laboratories including bench and animal studies (at biosafety levels 2 and 3). The candidate will work with other members of the NERBL research team on scientific projects. Activities in the laboratory include cell culture, culture and quantification of viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens, nucleic acid extraction and PCR, other microbiological techniques, immunological assays, which may include serum neutralizing assays, ELISA, flow cytometry, ELISPOT, immunofluorescence assays, microscopy and similar methods. The position will include working with laboratory animals including administration of pathogens and test articles, study related sample collection, necropsy and tissue collection. The candidate will be expected to accurately record and interpret data, assist with preparing reports, publications and presentations. The individual will be expected to work independently and assist in research design and modification of techniques and protocols as well as taking on new and/or additional duties as skills improve and laboratory needs change. The applicant should be well organized, able to follow established research protocols and trouble shoot lab procedures. Motivation to learn new laboratory methods and master equipment, and to contribute to the success of the research is expected. The individual may provide direction to others in the laboratory and help manage laboratory operations. The position requires a college degree in biological sciences, molecular biology, animal sciences, biotechnology, or a related field.
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in biological sciences or related field and 1+ years of related laboratory experience. • Experience working at biosafety level 2. • Strong technical skills in a variety of relevant laboratory techniques. • Experience working with laboratory animals. • Ability to interpret and present research findings in written and oral formats. • Must be willing to enroll in the Federal Select Agent Program. • Must be medically fit for working in the A/BSL3 environment, able to use a respirator, and undertake any OHS required screening and immunizations.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Skill sets necessary to undertake immunology, microbiology and/or virology research in the laboratory setting. • Broad familiarity with relevant software programs (Microsoft Office, Prism, other).
Pay Range Minimum $24.00, Midpoint $28.55, Maximum $33.10 Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
