    Departmental Overview

    The Lawrence Hall of Science is UC Berkeley's public science center. Our mission is to inspire and engage through science discovery and learning in ways that advance equity and opportunity. We do this by working with audiences that include learners, who experience our programs and products; educators, who work both in and out of school settings; and partners, who conduct research, build capacity for learning, and transform education systems. Research underlies everything we do, and we design all of our programs and products to have high impact beyond the walls of The Lawrence.

    Since we were founded in 1968, The Lawrence has been at the forefront of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning. The Lawrence is unique among science centers as it is a Learning Lab. We design, develop and study a wide array of science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning programs and products for youth, families and adults from diverse backgrounds in our specialized facilities and through our community partnerships. Our spaces and partnerships offer unique opportunities for public engagement and learning, curriculum and instructional materials design, professional learning, and research on learning, instruction, and pathways towards STEM careers. We disseminate and scale-up our effective and innovative learning programs and materials in ways that broaden participation in STEM and have local, national, and global impact.

    Responsibilities

    Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced engineering professional in a specialized engineering phase of a significant training and research effort. Assignments typically require concentration in a field of application where subject matter knowledge relevant to research objectives and methodology is of great value in understanding and establishing engineering design criteria. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Design, evaluation, construction, and operations of custom exhibits and educational interactive exhibits, devices, and materials. Serves as Production Studio Superintendent.



    • 25% - Provides full range of professional engineering services to research projects; meets with research staff in the design and development phase.

    • 20% - Performs design, construction, assembly and testing of complex interactive exhibits, equipment ,and instrument systems. Interprets complex scientific concepts into creative interactive exhibits to effectively translate content to the general public audience

    • 15% - Determines project specifications and parameters. Gather and analyzes data; prepares formal engineering reports, drawings and status reports. Does project estimation, timeline and development, and tracking. Provides feasibility assessments and develops project costs estimates. Analyzes and articulates the tradeoffs (budget, timeline, implementation) of particular designs and solutions

    • 15% - Manages and supervises Production Studio staff.

    • 10% - Provides engineering information and advice to Principal Investigators, program directors, and/or other LHS educators with administrative responsibility for the educational programs, research programs, and public science center.

    • 10% - Responsible for ensuring Production Studio facility operates safely, meeting University, OSHA and all other agency requirements, and that staff are properly trained.

    • 5% - Other duties as assigned and professional development



    Required Qualifications



    • Thorough knowledge associated with independently performing the full range of engineering professional designwork.

    • Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.

    • Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order tomeet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.

    • Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.

    • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

    • Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.

    • Ability to lead and influence others.



    LICENSE



    • Must maintain valid CA DL and clean DMV record.



    EDUCATION



    • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.



    Salary & Benefits

    This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $88,900.00 - $126,400.00
