    Position description

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoc Employee in the Ruhi Lab, in the area of quantitative ecology. The postdoc will work on the project Time-series Analysis of Bay-Delta Flow-Ecology Relationships', which is part of a broader contract Options and Considerations for Broad Monitoring and Assessment Programs to Support Watershed-Wide Implementation of Instream Flow, Water Quality, and Related Requirements' funded by the State Water Resources Control Board (i.e., the "Water Board"). The project has three main goals: (1) Assimilate data streams from different long-term biomonitoring programs in the San Francisco Bay-Delta, which span spatial gradients, trophic levels (water quality, zooplankton, pelagic fish) and a wide range of sampling methods; (2) Use advanced time-series modeling techniques to understand ecological dynamics and food-web responses to freshwater flows; and (3) Build ecological modeling capacity in the Water Board via the production of training materials on time-series modeling techniques. The Postdoc employee will report to Albert Ruhi (UC Berkeley PI), and co-advised by Laura Twardochleb and Sam Bashevkin from the Environmental Program Managers at the Water Board.

    Responsibilities:

Under the mentorship of the PI, the Postdoc will contribute to the project in three major ways: (1) Data analysis: collate, clean, and assimilate data from publicly-available biomonitoring programs in the San Francisco Bay-Delta ecosystem; (2) Research: Examine ecological dynamics via advanced time-series modeling techniques, including multivariate autoregressive methods, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals; (3) Capacity building: Writing and sharing materials such as presentations, R code, and other reference materials to Water Board scientists and staff to help increase capacity to apply time-series models to ecological data.
