JOB TITLE Assistant Research Professor
LOCATION Worcester
DEPARTMENT NAME Mathematical Science
DIVISION NAME Worcester Polytechnic Institute - WPI
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) seeks applicants for an Assistant Research Professor in the general areas of computational mechanics and biology. Responsibilities for this position include the development of analytical and computational models to investigate impact of the subcellular and intercellular elastic structure on the dynamics of multicellular tissue motion and morphology. The main goals of the research are to develop mechanical models and numerical methods to understand how the cytoskeleton elasticity and remodeling affect tissue fluidity. For candidates with experience in developing tools in cell and tissue deformation analysis, there are opportunities to complete experiments.
JOB DESCRIPTION
WPI is a diverse campus of learners passionate about creating an inclusive workplace that promotes and values diversity. We are looking for candidates who can support our commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
This research position is housed in the Department of Mathematical Sciences within the research group of Dr. Min Wu and is a joint collaboration between the Wen Lab in Physics at WPI and the Sun Lab in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at UMass Amherst.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences has extensive research programs focused on computational approaches to investigate key questions in cellular and tissue biology. Dr. Wu's group leads a growing research program specializing in the modeling and computation of cell and tissue growth and morphogenesis, with a strong emphasis on understanding how geometry and mechanics influence cell and tissue dynamics in experiments.
The successful candidate is expected to have extensive experience in numerical optimization. Experience with solving nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations is a plus. A combined experimental-theoretical approach is used, where computational models are simulated on high performance computing systems at WPI. Upon joining the project, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of simulation code, the analysis of modeling frameworks, and the completion of additional experimental imaging studies. Additionally, weekly presentations with research updates and manuscript preparation for submission to peer reviewed journals will be required.
WPI's reputation as a rigorous and innovative university rests on the shoulders of its faculty. A highly selective, private technological university and one of the nation's first, WPI believes that when great minds work together, great advances follow. At WPI the boundaries to multidisciplinary collaboration are low. Faculty members, students, and other partners work together on the real-world projects and purposeful research that are hallmarks of the WPI experience. WPI is consistently ranked among the top 70 research institutions by US News &
World Report. Located one hour west of Boston, the university's campus is in Worcester, Massachusetts, a thriving 21st century college city recognized as a growing hub of scientific and technological innovation.
Qualified applicants should submit (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) a cover letter, and (3) contact information for at least three references. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
FLSA STATUS United States of America (Exempt)
