Current research centres upon 14C calibration and palaeoclimate as well as 14C wiggle matching. Alan was lead researcher on a large international study measuring atmospheric 14C in Younger Dryas (~12,950 - 11,600 years ago) tree-rings (Scientific Reports, 2016; Radiocarbon, 2016). He also led a study to obtain precise calendar ages for North Island pā, by 14C wiggle matching preserved palisade posts (Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, 2017). Other research has established the timing of arrival and impacts of Māori in New Zealand and 14C dating the key tephra marker beds, the Kaharoa, Taupo and Kawakawa/Oruanui Tephras.
