Songket and Tenun Pahang is the textile heritage of the Malay. There have been very litlle scientific studies made on improving the quality and productivity of songket and Tenun Pahang. Most of these cloths are made according to traditional method using the same material all this while. There are potentials to be explored in improving the technique of production, colouration and enhancing the fabric performance through the use of better materials.
Textile composites
In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the importance of textile-reinforced composites. It can be produced using the high performance fibres such as carbon and fibreglass or the natural fibres such as kenaf and pina. Multilayer structures and hybrid using high performance fibres has a lot of prospect to be explored in terms of its mechanical properties. Biocomposites using local argiculture waste is also another growing area of interest.
Product Evaluation
There are lots new materials introduced globally in the technical textile application which require assessment of its performance. Product evaluation focuses on research of textile materials in meeting high technical and functional requirements (such as mechanical, durability, impact, thermal, electrical, etc), and also aesthetic purposes. Areas such as ballistic performance, puncture resistance, tensile and tearing performance are examples of areas of interest.
