The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Fellow (RF) to join the ‘Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology (InVEST) in Southeast Asia’ project, a 5-year project that aims to provide a holistic understanding of regional tectonics, volcanoes, the linkages between the two, and their cascading hazards and impacts in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Asst Prof Lujia FENG and focus on developing postseismic models for recent large earthquakes along the Southeast Asian Ring of Fire. The candidate will explore various models of afterslip and viscoelastic relaxation, with an emphasis on both short-term and long-term deformation term deformation in the near field of earthquakes. Additionally, the RF will explore the possibility of using earthquake-cycle models to explain various slip behaviors along the Sunda megathrust. We will be hiring many research staff and students to work on this project, so it promises to be a very exciting time to join our team!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compile and analyze postseismic geodetic data for the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami

  • Communicate with relevant national and international agencies to acquire the necessary GNSS data for the 2004 event

  • Develop postseismic models that incorporate afterslip and viscoelastic relaxation, exploring various rheology parameters for the 2004 postseismic deformation

  • Research and compile postseismic models and data for other significant earthquakes in Southeast Asia, and model these events when sufficient data are available

  • Investigate earthquake-cycle models to elucidate different slip behaviors along the Sunda megathrust

  • Develop new community code/software for postseismic models, leveraging the latest scientific and technical advancements

  • Present scientific results at local and international meetings and conferences

  • Write up research results for publication in reputable international journals

  • Engage in and contribute to InVEST meetings and projects

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in Earth science, geophysics, geodesy, environmental science or a related field

  • Strong computation skills with experience in modelling using Fortran, MATLAB and/or Python.

  • Extensive experience in earthquake-related deformation modeling, including viscoelastic modeling and/or earthquake-cycle modeling

  • Breadth of knowledge in rock physics and rheology

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

  • Evidence of being able to work both independently and collaboratively, with a strong team spirit

EOS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and statement of interests. Applications will be reviewed immediately. We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidate will be notified.
