    Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The current base salary range for this position is $59,200 - $65,900. "Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

    Anticipated start: Summer 2024

    Position duration: One year with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funding.

    Position description

    The Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Specialist in the Getz Lab, in the area of Environmental Social Science.

    We are seeking a researcher to collaborate on our project "Hmong Diasporas and Cannabis: Medicinal Use, Criminal Justice Consequences, and Farm Structure Across Licensed and Unlicensed Geographies", which is funded by California's Department of Cannabis Control. The project is a highly collaborative effort involving a team of researchers from UC Berkeley and University of Montana.

    The project explores
    1) why and how people move to different areas and the role that farming plays in these migrations,
    2) the role of agriculture in people's lives and livelihoods, including farm work and investment dynamics,
    3) medicinal plant cultivation and use practices, especially how cannabis is grown and used by Hmong farmers, and
    4) law and policy, including interactions with law enforcement and criminal justice systems, and experiences navigating land and water use policy.

    Responsibilities:



    • Research team and community advisory board coordination

    • Data collection and fieldwork, including qualitative interviews, participant observation, photovoice and other qualitative method

    • Data processing and analysis

    • Development of deliverables, including science and policy communication materials

    • Outreach and communication with Hmong diasporic communities

    • Community engagement, partner relationship building, and maintenance

    • Mentoring of undergraduate assistants

    • Report preparation

    • Event planning




    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
    Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent international degree)

    Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
    3 years of experience

    Preferred qualifications



    • Masters in Environmental Social Science or related field

    • Fluency in Hmong language

    • Familiarity and engagement with Southeast Asian diasporas

    • Ability to travel within California for research

    • Excellent writing and communication skills

    • Experience working on team-based projects

    • Record of academic and/or white paper publications
